Turkey Accuses Israel of Using Security as Cover for Territorial Expansion

Turkey President

Turkey has sharply criticized Israel, accusing it of using national security concerns as a justification for expanding its territorial control in the Middle East.

Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Israel’s actions go beyond self-defense and reflect what he described as a broader strategy of land acquisition.

According to Fidan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government are using security arguments as a pretext for continued occupation and regional expansion.

Turkey’s Strong Criticism of Israel
Addressing diplomats and international delegates, Fidan stated that Israel is not solely focused on protecting itself, but rather seeking to control more territory.

He said:
“Israel is not after its own security. Israel is after more land. Security is being used by the Netanyahu government as an excuse to occupy more land.”

The Turkish minister argued that Israel has successfully created an international narrative portraying its actions as necessary for national security, but said recent developments have exposed broader ambitions.

According to him, events over the past several years show that Israeli policy is not limited to defense concerns.

Rising Tensions Since Gaza War Began
Relations between Turkey and Israel have become increasingly strained since the outbreak of the Gaza war following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel.

That attack triggered a major Israeli military campaign in Gaza, leading to a prolonged conflict that has drawn global attention and criticism.

Turkey has been one of the most vocal regional critics of Israel’s military operations, repeatedly calling for a ceasefire and stronger international action to protect Palestinian civilians.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also previously accused Israel of excessive force and has positioned Turkey as a defender of Palestinian rights.

Claims of Expansion Beyond Palestinian Territories
During his remarks, Fidan accused Israel of pursuing expansion not only in Palestinian territories but also in neighboring countries.

He cited Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Lebanon, and Syria as areas affected by what he described as ongoing occupation and expansionism.

According to him:
“From the Palestinian lands, Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and now towards Lebanon and Syria, it is an onward occupation and expansionism in the region.”

The comments reflect growing concerns in parts of the region over cross-border military operations and rising instability involving Israel and armed groups in Lebanon and Syria.

Israel has previously carried out strikes in Syria, saying it targets weapons transfers and hostile forces linked to Iran and militant groups. It has also exchanged fire with Hezbollah along the Lebanese border.

Call for Peaceful Coexistence
Fidan said long-term peace in the Middle East can only be achieved if all countries in the region are allowed to enjoy sovereignty, territorial integrity, and freedom from military pressure.

He urged Israel to recognize that regional peace depends on mutual respect rather than the use of force.

He said:
“Israel has to know that the only way to live peacefully in the region is to let the other countries enjoy their own security, territorial integrity, and freedom.”

Turkey’s message signals its continued support for a diplomatic solution to regional disputes and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Wider Regional Implications
Turkey’s remarks come at a time when tensions remain high across the Middle East. The Gaza conflict has strained diplomatic ties, triggered protests in many countries, and increased the risk of broader regional confrontation.

Several countries have expressed concern that continued fighting in Gaza, along with clashes involving Lebanon and Syria, could destabilize the region further.

As a NATO member with influence across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, Turkey’s criticism carries diplomatic significance. Ankara has often tried to balance relations with Western allies while maintaining an independent foreign policy on regional matters.

Israel’s Security Position
Israel has consistently maintained that its military actions are aimed at protecting its citizens from militant threats, including attacks from Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iranian-backed groups in Syria.

Israeli officials argue that security measures, border control, and military operations are necessary responses to repeated attacks and regional threats.

However, critics including Turkey say such measures increasingly extend beyond defense and contribute to occupation, displacement, and prolonged instability.

International Pressure Growing
As the war continues, calls for renewed diplomacy are growing louder. Humanitarian concerns in Gaza, border tensions in Lebanon, and military activity in Syria have all added pressure on global powers to seek de-escalation.

Turkey has repeatedly positioned itself as a voice calling for an immediate ceasefire, humanitarian access, and political negotiations.

Fidan’s latest remarks underline Ankara’s belief that lasting peace cannot be built through military dominance alone.
