The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has lost its only representative in the Nigerian Senate following the defection of Senator Pam Mwadkon Dachungyang to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was formally announced during Senate plenary, where the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read the lawmaker’s letter notifying the chamber of his decision to exit the ADP. Senator Dachungyang represents Plateau North Senatorial District.
In his notice, the senator attributed the move to irreconcilable differences and prolonged internal crises within the ADP, which he stated had undermined his ability to function effectively and advance the party’s ideals. He further explained that persistent factional disputes and organisational instability had hindered meaningful political engagement and legislative productivity.
The lawmaker disclosed that the decision followed extensive consultations with constituents, political associates, and key stakeholders within his senatorial district. The defection was framed as a strategic realignment aimed at providing a more stable and effective platform to pursue good governance, inclusive development, and improved representation.
It was also indicated that the APC offers a more structured and progressive political environment through which legislative priorities can be advanced with renewed focus. The senator requested formal recognition of his defection in line with constitutional provisions and sought admission into the APC caucus in the Senate.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio acknowledged the defection and welcomed the lawmaker to the ruling party, describing the move as part of ongoing political realignments within the National Assembly.
The development further strengthens the APC’s growing numerical dominance in the upper legislative chamber, while effectively eliminating the ADP’s presence in the Senate. Analysts note that the defection reflects a broader trend of opposition lawmakers migrating to the ruling party, reshaping the balance of power ahead of future legislative and electoral contests.
