African Union lifts sanctions on Guinea, reinstates the country in continental activities

The African Union (AU) has announced the lifting of sanctions and the suspension of Guinea’s membership in the bloc’s activities, a major diplomatic shift after more than four years of exclusion following a military coup in 2021. The decision was taken by the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) at its 1325th session on January 22, 2026 in Addis Ababa, where representatives reviewed Guinea’s political transition.

The sanctions originally imposed in September 2021 after then-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya’s military takeover that ousted President Alpha Condé included suspension from AU institutions and activities designed to pressure a return to constitutional rule.

The PSC’s move to lift Guinea’s suspension came after it welcomed the successful presidential election held on December 28, 2025, in which Doumbouya was declared winner and later inaugurated as civilian president in January 2026, a step the AU described as consistent with the return to constitutional order outlined in its transition roadmap.

Under the terms of the decision, Guinea is invited to resume full participation in all African Union activities, including meetings, committees and diplomatic engagements from which it has been barred since the coup. The PSC stressed that the reintegration was conditional on continued progress toward democratic consolidation, respect for the rule of law and sustained political dialogue.

The AU’s reinstatement of Guinea reflects a broader continental commitment to encouraging political transitions after periods of instability, while also signalling an emphasis on electoral processes as criteria for restoring diplomatic relations. Critics of the election, including some civil society groups and opposition figures, have described the December vote as flawed, but the AU’s assessment focused on the completion of the transition framework and willingness to engage in institutional processes.

Guinea’s return to the AU fold marks a turning point in its relations with regional partners and is expected to unlock renewed cooperation on political, security and development frontiers across the continent.
