Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace, has temporarily suspended its Lagos–London Gatwick flight operations after a routine technical inspection detected a minor fault on one of its long-haul aircraft, leading to an emergency safety-driven withdrawal of the flight.
According to a statement released on the airline’s official X account on Saturday, the issue was discovered shortly after passengers had already boarded the aircraft scheduled to depart from Lagos to London. In line with international aviation safety standards, the airline immediately halted the flight and carried out precautionary measures.
“Following the completion of passenger boarding, a routine post-boarding technical check identified a minor aircraft fault that required immediate attention,” the airline stated.
The carrier explained that all passengers on board were safely disembarked without incident while its engineering and maintenance team conducted a detailed assessment of the fault. Although the airline did not disclose the specific technical issue, it described it as minor but significant enough to warrant immediate intervention before takeoff.
Air Peace stressed that passenger safety remains its top operational priority, adding that no flight schedule or commercial consideration would ever override safety protocols.
“At Air Peace, the safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew will always take precedence over operational schedules,” the statement read. “While we understand the inconvenience this situation may have caused, taking swift preventive action was the responsible and necessary decision.”
The airline also confirmed that all affected passengers were promptly notified and provided with hotel accommodation, refreshments, and other necessary support services while arrangements were made to reschedule their travel.
To reduce disruption to its international route, Air Peace announced that a replacement aircraft would be deployed from London to operate the delayed Lagos–London Gatwick service.
“To minimise further disruption, a replacement aircraft from London will be dispatched and passengers are scheduled to depart this morning,” the airline said.
The Lagos–London route is one of Air Peace’s flagship international operations and represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s aviation expansion into long-haul global destinations. The service has been closely watched since its launch, as it provides direct connectivity between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, easing pressure on passengers who previously relied heavily on foreign carriers for the route.
Aviation experts note that such technical interruptions, while inconvenient, are not uncommon in international aviation, where strict safety checks often lead to last-minute flight adjustments or delays. They emphasize that preventive detection of faults is a sign of strong safety compliance rather than operational failure.
Passengers affected by the disruption expressed mixed reactions, with some appreciating the airline’s transparency and swift response, while others raised concerns over travel delays and missed connections.
Air Peace, however, reiterated its commitment to maintaining high safety standards and reliable service delivery, assuring customers that engineering teams were working to ensure the aircraft fleet remains fully compliant with global aviation requirements.
“We deeply appreciate the patience, understanding, and cooperation shown by our passengers during this period. Their trust remains incredibly important to us,” the airline added.
The airline also reaffirmed its long-term commitment to expanding international routes and strengthening Nigeria’s presence in global aviation, while ensuring that all operations meet strict safety and regulatory standards set by aviation authorities.
