Political commentator Hakeem Baba-Ahmed has delivered a blunt assessment of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the once-dominant opposition party is “drifting away” and beyond repair ahead of the 2027 general elections. The former Northern Elders Forum spokesperson and ex-Special Adviser on Political Affairs says the PDP has lost its sense of direction and failed to present a compelling, coherent alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Baba-Ahmed’s critique comes amid internal crises within the PDP, including leadership disputes, high-profile defections and waning influence, which he argues have left the party unable to articulate clear policy positions or strategy. He said the party’s decline has created space for other political formations, singling out the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and “others” as potential credible challengers if they can offer fresh ideas and genuine alternatives to Nigerians.
According to him, the PDP’s challenges stem largely from self-inflicted splits and a failure to adapt to changing political dynamics since losing federal power, with many key members defecting to the APC or other platforms. Baba-Ahmed warned that simply positioning the PDP as an opposition force focused on unseating the APC is no longer sufficient without a clear governance agenda and organisational coherence.
His statement reflects growing pessimism among some political observers and commentators about the state of Nigeria’s major opposition party, even as other figures within the PDP and its supporters continue to push for reforms and unity ahead of the next election cycle.
