Former Enugu East senator Nnaji quits PDP after 27 years, joins ADC

Veteran politician Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who previously represented Enugu East in the National Assembly, has formally left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after more than 27 years of membership and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). His departure marks one of the most significant long-standing PDP exits in the South-East in recent years.

In announcing his move to the ADC, Nnaji emphasised his desire for a new political platform that aligns with his vision for governance and national unity, saying lingering internal disagreements and what he described as lack of progress on core party reforms contributed to his decision. He joins a growing list of political figures who believe alternative platforms like the ADC can challenge the traditional two-party dominance in Nigeria’s political system.

Nnaji’s defection is expected to boost the ADC’s profile, particularly in the South-East, where the party has been seeking to expand grassroots support and contest more seats at both federal and state levels. Political strategists say the move may energise sections of the electorate disenchanted with the PDP’s internal dynamics and could usher in a more competitive multiparty environment.

However, some party insiders argue that individual defections, while symbolically significant, may not translate easily into broad electoral support unless accompanied by organisational strengthening and clear policy alternatives. Nonetheless, Nnaji’s entry into the ADC adds fresh momentum to the party’s outreach ahead of the next general election cycle.
