Fuel price hike sparks concern across Benin

Fuel shortages and rising prices are causing growing concern across Benin, where long queues are being reported at petrol stations following a new fuel price adjustment introduced at the start of May.

The government says the increase reflects global oil market pressures driven by ongoing international conflicts and supply disruptions. Officials add that the new pricing is aimed at stabilising fuel availability and ensuring consistent supply across the country.

Under the revised rates, petrol now sells at 725 CFA francs per litre, diesel at 750 CFA francs, and kerosene at 1,040 CFA francs significantly higher than earlier this year.

In major cities such as Cotonou, Porto-Novo, and Parakou, official fuel stations are largely complying with government-approved prices, especially following tighter regulatory enforcement. However, in rural and informal markets, prices remain unstable, with traders adjusting costs based on availability and transport conditions.

Transport operators and commuters say the increase is already affecting daily life, warning of higher fares and reduced mobility. Many fear the situation could push up the cost of food and essential goods as transport expenses rise.

Some residents are calling for a reversal or review of the new pricing structure, saying the increases are unsustainable in the current economic climate. Authorities, however, insist the measures are necessary to prevent shortages and maintain supply stability nationwide.
