Governor Lawal, Defence Chief Call for Stronger Collaboration to Tackle Banditry

Efforts to address insecurity in Northwestern Nigeria received renewed attention as Dauda Lawal and Olufemi Oluyede emphasized the need for sustained collaboration between government and the military to combat banditry.

The call was made during a high-level meeting at the Zamfara State Government House in Gusau, where Governor Lawal hosted the Chief of Defence Staff during an official visit to the state.

The meeting underscored the urgency of tackling persistent security challenges in Zamfara and the broader Northwest region, where banditry has continued to disrupt communities, displace residents, and strain local economies.

Renewed Commitment to Security
Governor Lawal used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Armed Forces in their ongoing operations against criminal elements

.
He expressed confidence in the capability of the military to overcome the threat posed by bandits, noting that the issue is not one of strength but of coordination and strategy.

“I don’t believe that these criminals are stronger than our troops; it is not possible. We only have challenges to address,” the governor said.

According to him, the responsibility of leadership goes beyond governance structures and extends to ensuring that citizens can live safely and carry out their daily activities without fear.

“As leaders, we must do everything we can to show that we are responsible leaders, so that people can live in peace,” he added.

Security as a Foundation for Development
Governor Lawal emphasized that security remains the bedrock of development, noting that no meaningful progress can be achieved in an environment of instability.

“Whatever we do, if there is no security, it is of no benefit to the people,” he said.
He stressed that his administration has consistently prioritized security, investing resources and building partnerships aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of security agencies.

The governor highlighted recent efforts by his government, including the procurement of sophisticated operational vehicles to support military and security operations in the state.

He noted that the vehicles were commissioned during a recent visit by the Minister of Defence, further demonstrating the state’s commitment to supporting federal security initiatives.

Support for the Military
Governor Lawal reiterated his readiness to continue providing logistical and institutional support to the military and other security agencies operating in Zamfara.

“As a government, we need the military’s cooperation to address this menace,” he said, adding that collaboration remains key to achieving lasting peace.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for ongoing support to the state in its fight against insecurity.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank Mr President for his continuous assistance to us, but we still need more,” the governor said.

While acknowledging federal efforts, he noted that the scale of the security challenge requires sustained and expanded intervention.

Defence Chief Commends State Government
In his remarks, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, commended Governor Lawal for what he described as “uncommon” support to military operations in the state.

He specifically praised the state’s backing of Operation Fansan Yamma, a military initiative aimed at tackling banditry and restoring peace in Zamfara.

“I am here today to commend His Excellency the Governor for the Operation Fansan Yamma, which is actually uncommon. I want to thank you particularly for that,” Oluyede said.

The Defence Chief also acknowledged the cooperation of the people of Zamfara, describing them as accommodating and supportive of security efforts.

“I equally thank the people of Zamfara, who are quite accommodating. I always say that Nigeria belongs to us,” he added.

Operation Fansan Yamma and Military Engagement
During his visit, General Oluyede toured the Theatre Operations Headquarters of Operation Fansan Yamma in Gusau, where he interacted directly with troops on the ground.

The visit provided an opportunity to assess ongoing operations, understand challenges faced by personnel, and explore ways to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

“I visited the Fansan Yamma Theatre Operations Headquarters, where I interacted with troops and highlighted challenges. Some issues were resolved, while others were noted for further action,” he said.

The Defence Chief’s engagement with frontline troops highlights the importance of leadership presence in boosting morale and ensuring operational responsiveness.

The Importance of Coordination
Both leaders emphasized that addressing banditry requires a coordinated approach involving multiple stakeholders.

Governor Lawal pointed out that while the military plays a central role, success also depends on the cooperation of state governments, local communities, and other security agencies.

Similarly, General Oluyede stressed that collaboration is essential to overcoming the complex nature of insecurity in the region.

“With people like Governor Lawal, we can address these challenges,” he said.
The Defence Chief’s remarks reflect a broader understanding that security challenges cannot be solved in isolation but require a unified effort across all levels of government.

Challenges in Zamfara and the Northwest
Zamfara State has been one of the most affected regions in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle with banditry.

Communities across the state have experienced:

  • Armed attacks on villages
  • Kidnappings for ransom
  • Displacement of residents
  • Disruption of farming and economic activities

These challenges have had far-reaching consequences for livelihoods, food security, and social stability.

The situation has also placed pressure on government resources and humanitarian systems.

Government and Military Synergy
The meeting between Governor Lawal and the Chief of Defence Staff highlights the growing synergy between state and federal authorities in addressing insecurity.

  • Such collaboration often includes:
  • Intelligence sharing
  • Logistical support
  • Joint operational planning
  • Community engagement
  • Resource allocation

By working together, both levels of government aim to create a more coordinated and effective response to security threats.

Community Role in Security
While much of the focus remains on military operations, both leaders acknowledged the role of local communities in supporting security efforts.

Community cooperation is often critical in providing intelligence, reporting suspicious activities, and fostering trust between civilians and security agencies.

The Defence Chief’s appreciation of Zamfara residents suggests recognition of this important contribution.

Looking Ahead
The renewed commitment to collaboration signals a positive step toward addressing insecurity in Zamfara and beyond.

However, experts note that sustained effort will be required to achieve lasting results.

This includes:

  • Continued investment in security infrastructure
  • Strengthening of intelligence networks
  • Addressing root causes of banditry such as poverty and unemployment
  • Enhancing community engagement
  • Ensuring accountability and transparency in security operations
