The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns that Nigeria’s judiciary is increasingly being influenced by political interests, warning that recent court rulings risk undermining democratic stability and public confidence in the legal system.
Party officials argued that a pattern of politically sensitive judgments has created the perception of judicial bias, especially in cases involving elections, party leadership disputes, and governance matters. The PDP maintained that the judiciary must remain independent and insulated from partisan pressure to preserve the integrity of constitutional democracy.
The criticism comes amid heightened legal battles across political parties, including disputes over conventions, defections, impeachment moves, and electoral processes. Analysts note that judicial intervention has become more central to political outcomes in recent years, increasing the stakes around court credibility.
Legal experts have also urged institutional reforms, greater transparency in judicial appointments, and stronger oversight mechanisms to restore trust in the courts, warning that prolonged erosion of confidence could weaken democratic accountability and the rule of law.
