SYRIA announces CEASEFIRE after days of intense CLASHES in ALEPPO

The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced a formal ceasefire on Friday, January 9, 2026, following several days of heavy fighting between government forces and insurgent groups in the northern province of Aleppo. The clashes, which had intensified earlier in the week, reportedly resulted in numerous casualties and significant damage to civilian infrastructure in the outskirts of the historic city.

According to a state media broadcast, the truce was reached to allow for humanitarian aid to reach affected areas and to provide a window for local mediation efforts. The Ministry stated that while the military would halt offensive operations, it reserved the right to respond to any violations by “terrorist organizations.” The recent surge in violence had threatened to unravel the fragile stability that had persisted in the region for several months.

International monitors and local residents reported a cautious calm returning to the frontlines on Friday evening. However, humanitarian agencies warned that thousands of people remain displaced and in urgent need of food and medical assistance. The ceasefire is being viewed as a temporary reprieve, with many observers skeptical of its longevity given the deep-seated tensions and unresolved territorial disputes between the warring factions in northern Syria.
