MINISTER of WORKS hold MEETING with WORLD BANK over FUNDING MODALITIES

Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has held talks with a World Bank delegation led by Mr. Matthew Verghis to explore funding mechanisms and technical arrangements for key road infrastructure projects. The meeting took place in Abuja, reflecting ongoing collaboration between the Federal Government and international partners on transport development.

Details released by the Ministry of Works indicate that discussions focused on how to align World Bank financing frameworks with Nigeria’s infrastructure priorities, including major road rehabilitation and upgrades intended to enhance connectivity and economic activity. The talks address both existing federal projects and future initiatives requiring structured support.

The engagement comes against the backdrop of the government’s renewed push to address Nigeria’s chronic transport infrastructure deficit, particularly rural roads and national highways. The World Bank has previously backed major rural road programmes that aim to rehabilitate thousands of kilometres of regional road networks, supporting economic inclusion and market access for local communities in several states.

Umahi’s outreach to the World Bank also aligns with broader efforts by the Federal Government to secure sustainable external financing that complements budgetary allocations for infrastructure, in light of national constraints and competing priorities. Analysts say expanding international partnerships can help Nigeria close critical infrastructure gaps, support job creation and facilitate broader economic growth.

The meeting underscores the government’s strategy of multi-tier collaboration blending domestic planning with global financing institutions to accelerate the delivery of high-impact public works in transportation and logistics.
