NUPRC WORKERS SUSPEND STRIKE AFTER AGREEMENT WITH MANAGEMENT

Operations have returned to normal at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission after workers suspended their nationwide strike following successful negotiations with management. The industrial action, led by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, was called off after discussions over welfare-related grievances.

The workers had embarked on an indefinite strike earlier in the week, protesting the alleged non-implementation of agreed staff welfare packages. The action temporarily shut down administrative operations at the commission’s headquarters and disrupted routine office activities.

However, officials say the strike lasted about 12 hours before both sides reached an agreement late on June 1, leading to the suspension of the protest and resumption of normal duties.

The NUPRC management clarified that while administrative functions were affected, key regulatory activities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector remained uninterrupted throughout the period, with no disruption to crude oil production.

Authorities also dismissed reports suggesting widespread operational shutdowns or disputes over foreign training, describing such claims as misleading.

Management has now pledged to improve staff welfare, enhance working conditions, and strengthen training opportunities in line with the Petroleum Industry Act, as part of efforts to prevent future industrial action.
