Wole Akinwale to Lead Oyo State Delegation to Papyrus Global Mayors Conference and Awards 2026 in Abuja

The Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), Wole Akinwale, is set to lead a high-level delegation from Oyo State to the 8th edition of the Papyrus Global Mayors Conference and Awards (PAGMACA) 2026, a major international gathering focused on strengthening local governance and promoting sustainable development across communities.

The event, organized by The Papyrus Global, will take place from April 29 to May 1, 2026, at The Palms Hotel in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The conference is widely regarded as one of the leading platforms for dialogue, recognition, and capacity building in local governance across Africa and beyond.

This year’s edition, tagged “Strengthening Local Governance for Resilient, Inclusive, and Sustainable African Communities,” is expected to attract a diverse group of participants including mayors, chairpersons of local government councils, public administrators, policy experts, development partners, and governance practitioners from different parts of the world. According to the organizers, delegates are expected from the United States, several European and Asian countries, as well as more than 20 African nations.

Wole Akinwale’s participation as head of the Oyo State delegation highlights the state government’s continued commitment to improving grassroots governance structures and enhancing institutional effectiveness within local administration. As the Chairman of the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission, Akinwale oversees key administrative functions including human resource management, policy implementation, and capacity development across local government systems in the state.

Sources within the Commission noted that the delegation’s participation is expected to open new avenues for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and policy engagement with global stakeholders. It is also seen as an opportunity to showcase Oyo State’s ongoing reforms in local governance, particularly in areas of administrative efficiency, community development, and institutional strengthening.

The conference program will feature high-level panel discussions, technical sessions, and award presentations centered on governance innovation, grassroots development strategies, institutional reforms, and community resilience. Special attention will also be given to strategic partnerships aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing the effectiveness of local government systems across Africa.

In addition to the formal sessions, PAGMACA 2026 will provide networking opportunities for participants to engage with international development partners, donor agencies, and governance institutions. The event also serves as a platform for recognizing outstanding contributions to local governance through its awards segment, which honors individuals and institutions demonstrating excellence in public service delivery and community impact.
Akinwale’s leadership role in the delegation underscores the strategic importance of the Oyo State LGSC in shaping local government administration. His engagement at the conference is expected to contribute significantly to discussions on strengthening decentralization, improving workforce capacity in local councils, and advancing policies that promote inclusive governance at the grassroots level.

Observers note that Oyo State’s participation in such international forums reflects a broader commitment by subnational governments in Nigeria to engage more actively in global governance conversations. It also positions the state as a key contributor to policy innovation and sustainable development discourse within the African governance space.
The Papyrus Global Mayors Conference and Awards has, over the years, evolved into a premier international platform that bridges the gap between local governance practitioners and global development frameworks. Through its annual gatherings, The Papyrus Global continues to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and recognition of excellence in leadership and public administration.

As preparations intensify for the 2026 edition, expectations remain high that the event will further strengthen partnerships among participating countries and institutions, while also reinforcing the importance of local governance as a foundation for national development.
The participation of the Oyo State LGSC delegation, led by Wole Akinwale, is therefore seen as a significant step in advancing Nigeria’s engagement in international governance dialogue and reinforcing its role in shaping sustainable and inclusive community development across Africa.
