Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have announced the resumption of an indefinite strike, effective Monday, March 24, 2025, following the failure of area council authorities to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage in their February salaries.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) made the declaration after an emergency meeting, accusing the government of violating agreements reached earlier this year. The union had suspended a previous strike on February 21, 2025, after assurances that the new wage would be implemented, but the February salaries were processed without the increase.
In a strongly worded communique, the NUT condemned the continued “impoverishment” of teachers, questioning why they were being subjected to further hardship despite a signed agreement. The union is demanding:
• Immediate inclusion of the new minimum wage in all salary payments
• Full payment of the wage differential for February
• Payment of six months’ arrears and
• Implementation of additional allowances, including a 40% peculiar allowance
FCT NUT Chairman Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas criticized the area council chairmen for failing to fulfill their promises, calling their actions “disturbing, disheartening, and lacking in empathy.” He warned that all primary schools in the FCT would remain closed until the government meets the teachers’ demands.
